Author research

For my author research I chose Ansel Adams because I think his photographs are really impressive and he is really good at stressing the beauty of nature. I think every single photo transfers a special atmosphere and magic. I wanted to learn more about this photographer and his work.

The full name of my chosen photographer is Ansel Easton Adams.
He was born in Western Addition of San Francisco, California, on February 20 1902 and died in Monterey, California, on April 22 1984, at age 84.

He taught himself darkroom techniques, read photography magazines, attended camera club meetings and went to art exhibits. After his big breakthrough he spent much time in New Mexico with artists including Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe and Paul Strand. He also joined photographers Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans in their commitment to affecting social and political change through art.

Adam was injured in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. His broken nose was never properly set, remaining crooked for the rest of his life. He was a hyperactive and sickly child with few friends. He was educated by private teacher. His early passion was playing the piano which he taught himself.

He had multiple exhibits, for example in New York and San Francisco. Additionally he received the Sierra Club Muir Award, was awarded with the conservation Service Award by the Department of the interior and with the Presidential Medal for Freedom by the US President Jimmy Carter. He also received the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. In 1966 he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He used his work to promote conversation of wilderness areas.
His iconic black-white images helped to establish photography among the fine arts.

His images are rich in tonal quality from rich deep blacks, to creamy midtones, to bright whites that maintain detail.
He took photos of nature mostly in the United states but also in New Mexico.
